ANANTHAPURA LAKE TEMPLE KASARGOD

The Ananthapuram Lake Temple is the only lake temple in Kerala, located 5 kilometers from Kumbala and 30 kilometers from Bekal in Kasaragod district in Kerala. The temple is believed to be the ‘moolasthanam’ (Original Abode) of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram. The presiding deity is Sree Padmanabha (Lord Mahavishnu) in the sitting posture. The temple is believed to have been built in the 9th century AD. The temple is built in the center of the lake. Popular belief is that there is a crocodile living in the lake that is the guardian of the temple. When one dies, another crocodile appears mysteriously. The idol here worships is made of ‘Panchaloha’. The temple walls are adorned with fine murals depicting incidents and heroes in Puranas. An attracting cave is there on the temple that opens to a small pond. Interesting to note that the water level in the pond remains steady regardless of the climate. The temple is a fine example of splendid Kerala temple architecture. The temple is a must watch. The temple is well connected with the road. To reach the temple, one has to travel 11 km from Kasargod to Kumbala. From Kumbala, there is a road that leads to Badiadka, and it is a further 3 km to Naikap. The temple is located 1 km from there.  The road way to the temple is also an enchanting one.
